I’m excited today to talk to you about something I’ve both personally experienced and have found to be true for my clients as well.
And I was inspired to share this because of a conversation I had with one of my Business Accelerator Mastermind clients the other day, a lovely lady called Tracy. After 3 months of the mastermind we have a 1:1 session, just to dig a little bit deeper and tackle any issues that don’t come up during the group sessions that might just be a little bit personal or may not have come to the surface, but are still holding things back deep down.
And for Tracy, what emerged was that she had a major block and it’s something that’s affected her all her life.
Now her journey so far has been awesome - when she joined me 3 months ago, she was really struggling with motivation, she had very sadly lost both parents last year and was having real ups and downs in terms of focus. She was doing an extra qualification she felt she had to do but was really hating, and felt like she couldn’t get her business started properly until that was done because of major imposter syndrome. And she felt very much like she had to follow the ‘conventional’ route for her profession and become the same as every other bookkeeper out there.
In our time together she’s dropped the extra qualification and realised that she has some amazing unique talents and skills she can use to help her clients make amazing changes in their businesses, which are far more valuable than this extra piece of paper! And she’s created an incredible unique niche for herself as a Studio Angel for Interior Designers, helping them sort all their background systems & processes out and providing bookkeeping support so they can get on with the creative work they love. She’s absolutely brilliant and you can tell this is totally right for her, her energy and enthusiasm is just right up there now and she’s feeling so much calmer and more focused. We’ve done loads of money mindset work and she’s feeling really confident about her services and pricing too.
But as I say there was still something holding Tracy back, and that something turned out to be her dyslexia.
It’s always been an enormous barrier for her because of previous experiences she’d had in her life - people making fun of her spellings and being told in her earlier career that she would never go any further until her English had improved.
So as you can imagine, when it comes to running your own business, that sort of thing is going to stick in your mind and rear its head every time you go to put out a post or email your list - and it definitely has been for Tracy.
So it was wonderful to be able to work through that with her and look at reframing that - why it doesn’t need to be a barrier, why she has all the skills, strengths and insights to succeed in spite of this difficulty - and how she could actually use it to motivate her progress and show the world what she’s capable of rather than having it hold her back any more. And what was wonderful was that she went and put out a social media post straight after our chat together! But what was even more wonderful was that we realised her dyslexia and the imposter syndrome around that, this thing that had been holding her back for years in so many ways - was actually about to become her superpower! Because Tracy is now feeling empowered to share this struggle she’s been putting up with - she’s kindly allowed me to talk about it and use her name today - and that is SO powerful.
You see, most of us spend so much time showing up as we think we ‘should’ show up in our businesses that we keep trying to create this image of perfection - and what happens is that we lose our human-ness along the way. And we show up as this ‘picture perfect’, “I’ve got it all together”, flawless person that we think we need to present to the world. Or, as in Tracy’s case and I know for a lot of other people too… we stop showing up at all for fear of not being good enough.
But I really believe that one of the best and most important things you can do in your marketing and in your business in general is to be yourself, flaws and all. Because that vulnerability, that ‘imperfection’ as it were - that’s what other people relate to and understand - that’s how they know you’re one of them, you’re on their team! And if they see you making a few errors but just showing up, having a great time and getting on with it anyway - that’s inspirational. And it’s honest. So Tracy’s dyslexia may have held her back for years but now it can become her superpower! And her journey in overcoming the mental blocks around it will give her so much self-belief and strength in other areas of her life and business, too.
And that’s the thing about our deepest struggles and our biggest blocks. They FEEL massive, they feel like things we wish we weren’t saddled with so we could just get on and live our lives easily.
But there’s SO much valuable learning and growth to be found in overcoming them. Our blocks are, in the strangest way, a wonderful blessing - and when we’ve worked through them and grown into the person we were truly meant to be, we genuinely feel like we can conquer the world!
I’ve been on that exact same journey myself, with social anxiety, massive self-consciousness and general anxiety. There was a time a few years ago where I could barely look people in the eye, even friends and family at times. And I just thought back then that that was how it was!
But thankfully my journey led me to hypnotherapy and the world of personal development and now it’s definitely my superpower - because I know EXACTLY how my clients feel when they tell me they’re anxious about something or feeling trapped and unable to move forward with a situation. It’s given me incredible empathy, it’s made me a wonderful listener and observer of people, and it’s given me the knowledge and skills to know how to REALLY help other people who are in that exact same place. And I’d like to bet for Tracy, too, that as she moves forward she will be able to bring empathy and skills from her own journey into her work, which will make her even more unique and special to those lucky clients of hers!
So if there’s something you’re struggling with right now I would just love you to know that this could turn out to be your secret weapon! And that it’s totally normal and ok to feel frustrated, to struggle with motivation or to question yourself. But if you can look inside that struggle for the unique skills and opportunities it brings you, you’re taking the first few steps to overcoming it for good and discovering who you were truly meant to be.
